Nomination & Election Process
Horizon Ottawa will be electing six new board members to serve a two year term, starting immediately until the 2028 AGM. Candidates will be declared and introduced at the Annual General Meeting on Saturday, May 2, 2026. (register to attend)
Candidates will be introduced at the Annual General Meeting to be held on May 2, 2026. The election will take place electronically via Loomio. Voting will be open immediately following the general meeting for 7 days and is open to all Horizon Ottawa members in good standing as of May 2, 2026.
Members can nominate themselves or another member until April 30th by filling out the application form. We will be electing up to six directors to join the 12 person board.
What’s involved with being a Board Member?
Horizon Ottawa board members provide core support to the organizations Coordinator and staff, guiding ongoing campaigns and organizational development.
On a monthly basis, members can anticipate 3-10 hours of engagement. This includes: director, member and committee meetings, each meeting once monthly; attendance at community and hosted events and other support as required.
Board Member responsibilities include:

Strategic planning
- setting organizational goals for the year in terms of fundraising, campaign activities, stakeholder relations, and more

Non-profit management
- ensuring that we are following the rules as a non-profit, decision-making around spending money, staffing, and policies

Communications
- drafting and reviewing press releases/communications, acting as representatives of the organization in the media

Attending events and door knocking
- representing the organisation at community events, rallies, main-streeting and canvassing

Membership Engagement and Fundraising
- participating in call parties, member recruitment, writing fundraising communications
