Horizon Ottawa is looking to hire an organizer for a 10-week contract starting on August 19th, 2025 with a possibility of extension. The contract will consist of mobilizing our members, supporters and residents around our various campaigns with a focus on tenant rights advocacy. Outreach would include mainly things like door-to-door canvassing as well as volunteer recruitment and organization. This position is available in thanks to our partnership with the Women’s National Housing and Homelessness Network, who will also be providing guidance and support for this role.
The ideal candidate will have previous experience with community/political organizing work throughout the City of Ottawa as well as some knowledge and understanding of Ottawa municipal politics and social movements in the city. They will be able to work independently and problem-solve with little supervision. The ideal candidate will also have creative ideas of how to drive action and engagement around our campaigns.

Responsibilities:
- Organizing and conducting door-to-door canvasses throughout the city
- Recruiting, training, and managing volunteers
- Phone canvassing and potentially mainstreeting
- Educating members and volunteers on our various campaigns and issues.
- Building our membership base
- Working with Horizon Ottawa’s Coordinator to carry out this work
- Conduct a gaps analysis on barriers to tenant justice experienced by women and gender-diverse tenants, particularly those facing systemic marginalization (e.g., Indigenous, racialized, newcomer, disabled, low-income).
- Document local legal aid offices, tenant support services, referral pathways and mediation services and develop a resource document, specifically taking into consideration unique needs of women and gender-diverse people (childcare availability, transportation accessibility).
- Mobilize information about the tenant rights resource at community events/pop-ups, during door knocking/canvasing opportunities etc.
- Train/equip community advocates on the tenants right resource to ensure ongoing point contacts for tenant rights in community.
- Track outreach and engagement metrics to report back on in the fall
- Develop an Advocacy Plan including:
- Policy recommendations to strengthen tenant protections.
- Community-identified priorities and testimonies.
- Strategies for engaging municipal and territorial/federal policymakers.
Qualifications:
- Some understanding and knowledge of Ottawa municipal affairs and City Hall politics
- Experience as a community organizer or campaigner
- Knowledge and interest in barriers to tenant justice experienced by women and gender-diverse tenants
- Previous experience with volunteer management
- Ability to work independently
- Be available to work afternoons, evenings, and weekends
- Knowledge of campaign outreach software such as Callhub is an asset
- Knowledge of CRMs like Nationbuilder is an asset
- Bilingualism (English and French) is an asset
- A driver's license and access to a car is an asset
- Have a positive attitude, and a commitment to social justice
Compensation will be hourly at $24/hour for 37.5 hours a week. This is a short, 10 week long contract position until the end of October.
